Fashion gives us the opportunity to share our personality, our mood, and our energy. It gives us the freedom to be whoever we want to be and to share that with the world without saying a word. Your personal style is like a sneak peek into your soul; a sacred place that leads you to self expression, self awareness, and self confidence. Gone are the days of following fashion rules as we continue to embrace the freedom of personal style: an expression of the very things that make you you. There is less of a focus on how fashion makes you look and more on how fashion makes you feel.
As a fashion stylist, Kirsten is often asked how she can help clients find their personal style and the answer is easy: get out of your comfort zone and take a risk. And there is no better place to start than with accessories. An outfit isn’t complete without them and they have the power to elevate your look from ordinary to extraordinary. You’ll know you’ve found the perfect piece when it not only matches your lifestyle, but also pairs perfectly with items already in your wardrobe. It will separate you from the crowd without requiring a big commitment – not to mention, accessories make great treasures to pass down to future generations.
At Klas squared, we can’t help but have an affinity for jewelry. It often tells a story that goes much deeper than the outfit it embellishes. And when it comes to special events including weddings, holiday parties, and New Year’s, accessories are to be indulged in. Here are Kirsten’s quick tips on how to make your accessories work for you:
Necklines: Always consider your neckline before pairing earrings and necklaces with a top or dress. You want each part of your outfit to have its chance to shine without creating competition. Find balance by following the guidelines below:
v-neck: As the most versatile neckline, you can wear something that falls just below the collar bone, or a chain and pendant style necklace. Don’t be afraid to pair earrings in a similar shape, colour or texture.
strapless or off the shoulder: I would suggest staying away from necklaces and instead finding a great statement earring.
crew neck: This neckline looks best with short or long earrings and can be paired with a long necklace or layered necklaces of different lengths. Avoid short necklaces as they will likely get lost amongst the neckline.
scoop neck: Similar to a v-neck the world is your oyster. With a little more space to play, don’t be afraid to try layering shorter necklaces of lighter weights and add a clean, classic earring for a final touch.
Make a statement: Earrings continue to be the accessory of choice for making a statement this season. From classic to contemporary, and whimsical to bold, there is a pair for every personality. If you’re feeling fearless, wear your hair up to really show off your charms.
Play matchmaker: If you have a favourite colour or theme in your wardrobe, don’t be afraid to take it to the next level with your accessories. This can also extend to beauty – I love when a bright lipstick matches an earring or a manicure goes perfectly with a clutch. My go-to colour red is incorporated throughout my outfits from my shoes, to my handbag, to my lipstick and nail colour. You can also find tones that match this colour throughout my wardrobe to keep my look cohesive.
Lucky charms: There is no doubt that accessories have the power to give us confidence – many clients refer to their jewelry as the armour they adorn to take on the day. If you have a favourite piece that gives you that extra energy and inspiration, make sure to wear it on the big day. There’s no rule that says you can’t build an outfit by starting with an accessory!
Add some sparkle and shine:
At Klas squared we work with a lot of women on preparing for the big day – and who doesn’t want to sparkle and shine! We’re always able to find the right balance of colour and shimmer with our Swarovski crystal and Swarovski pearl designs. Whether it’s an accent bracelet, or drop earrings that double as wedding party gifts, we love adding a final touch to any look.
Bonus tip: Keep your ears covered. I have to agree with celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe on this one: if your ears are pierced you should always have something in them. You can keep it simple with classic studs or tiny treasures, but either way, don’t leave something missing!
